PHILOSOPHY
What is "philosophy"? Simply put, philosophy "... is how you see yourself and those around you." In Jeff Olson's book, "The Slight Edge", he had a chain-of-effects formula in regards to philosophy that basically states, YOU PHILOSOPHY creates YOUR ATTITUDE which creates YOUR ACTION which ultimately will create YOUR RESULT.
As a game official how you see your role and the role of players, coaches and parents, "your philosophy" will directly effect your attitude.
Jeff Olson go on to state in his book that are two type of attitudes: Entitled and Value-driven. Each attitude has it's own voice...
1. Entitled, "What have you done for me lately?" and
2. Value-driven, "What can I do to help you?"
Value-driven officiating is the heart of PROGAMEOFFICIAL.
PROGAMEOFFICIAL PHILOSOPHY
1. Game Officials are, "Waiters with striped shirts", ...here to serve.
2. Game Officials are, D.E.A.
(a) Directors not dictators,
(b) Encouragers not enforcers and
(c) Advisors not agitators.
3. Game Officials are NOT, "bigger than the game."...it's a honor to serve.
