Youth Football Crew Chief Guidelines

Youth Crew Chiefs are the backbone of ProGameOfficial (PGO). The privilege of being a youth crew chief with PGO comes with numerous responsiblities to your fellow officials and to this organization. A crew chief is expected to be a mentor, a trainer, a conduit for information and a postive steward of the organizations and must maintain a positive relationship with all our youth football and administrators.

 

A youth crew chief with ProGameOfficial is expected to:

  • Have at least four years of officiating experience and have completed the PGO'S crew chief certification course.

  • Be a positive leader and mentor of the crew.

  • Be appropriate physical condition and be able to physically carry out all on-field responsibilities of the crew chief and the crew chief poition.

  • Have etensive knowledge and demonstrate high proficiency of the NFHS rules as well as the youth football organization rules and penalty enforcements. Assist crew in the properly applying these rules to the level of the concest.

  • Have extensive knowledge and demonstrate high proficiency of the PGO mechanics. Use only PGO mechanics.

  • Mentor all officials, especially newer officials, on the proper application of the all rules and mechanics.

  • Be available to work most Saturdays.

  • Confirm with the crew regarding game site details, arrival times, pre-game location, uniform, etc. no less than 48 hours prior to the game.

  • Conduct effective and informative pre-game discussions. This includes discussions on rules, mechanics, special situations, previous game review and crew chief conference calls rule dicisions. It is the responsibility of the crew chief to ensure that all members participate in the discussions.

  • Conduct effective and informative halftime discussions. This includes reviewing unusual plays, situations, and mechanics, allowing for crew input and preparing crew for the second half.

  • Conduct an appropriate postgame discussion that includes game review, compliments and constructive criticism.

  • Be an exemplary representative of PGO while on the field, off the field and at special events. This includes appropriate interaction with fellow officials, game staff, players, coaches and conference representatives.

  • Serve as an extension of PGO training program.

  • Support PGO's evaluation program by providing informative and comprehensive feedback for all officials worked with.

  • Be responsive to communications from others within PGO membership.
